Violent Friday in Rochester leaves 7 wounded and 1 dead

The City of Rochester is dealing with one of its most violent days this year. On Friday, the Rochester Police Department handled 6 shootings leaving 7 people suffering gunshot wounds and 1 person dead.

The shootings started on Friday morning around 4:20am when the Rochester Police Department responded to the area of Lyell Avenue and Murray Street for a Shot Spotter activation for multiple shots fired. As officers were responding to investigate, they noticed a vehicle leaving the area driving on Glasser Street. Officers stopped the vehicle to make contact with the occupants of the vehicle.

As the officers were making contact with the occupants of the vehicle, they noticed that a back seat passenger brandished a handgun, which led the officers to shoot the male. The male was pronounced dead on scene.

Interim Rochester Police Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan was on scene and held a press conference late Friday afternoon. During the press conference Chief Herriott-Sullivan stated it was still very early into their investigation and that the New York State Attorney General’s Office is also investigating the incident. Chief Herriott-Sullivan advised that she was not able to provide a lot of information at this time. She did state that from the little bit of information she has and the reviewing of just a few clips of the body camera video, Chief Herriott-Sullivan stated that she had not seen anything yet that causes her concern, but that she has to be cautious. Chief Herriott-Sullivan stated that there are still video they have to see, interviews to conduct, and then she will be in a better position to share her thoughts on the shooting.

The two officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave.

On Friday afternoon around 1:30pm a victim was dropped off in a private vehicle at Strong Memorial Hospital after sustaining a gunshot wound. The Rochester Police Department has confirmed that the victim was shot on Chandler Street about 10-15 minutes prior to the victim’s arrival at the hospital. The victim’s condition is unknown.

About 5:00pm on Friday the Rochester Police Department responded to the area of Frost Street and Epworth Street for a report of a male shot. When officers arrived on scene, they found the victim, an 18-year-old male on Epworth Street suffering from at least one gunshot wound. The victim was taken by ambulance to Strong Memorial Hospital. His condition is unknown.

Around 6:00pm Friday evening the Rochester Police Department responded to the area of 1200 North Clinton Avenue for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived at the scene, they found evidence of a shooting, but no victims. The victims later showed up at Rochester General Hospital by private vehicle. The victims ages 13, 14, and 22 all sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

On Friday night around 9:15pm the Rochester Police Department responded to the area of Avenue A for a report of a person shot. When officers arrived on scene, they found a 29-year-old Rochester residence sitting in a truck with at least one gunshot wound. The victim was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital. His injuries are non-life-threatening.

Friday night about 10:50pm the Rochester Police Department responded to Dove Street for a report of a person shot. When officers arrived on scene, they found a child had sustained a gunshot wound to their body. The child was taken to a local hospital, where their condition is unknown.

The Rochester Police Department is investigating all the shootings and currently have no suspects in custody.
