Rochester Police Officers shoot male with knife

On Wednesday morning around 3:00am the Rochester Police Department responded to the Open Door Mission for a male armed with a knife. Captain Mark Mura with the Rochester Police Department stated that as officers arrived on scene the male was no longer in the building. Officers did locate the male outside of the building. As officers approached the male, they noticed the male cutting himself with the knife and making threats to kill the officers.
Captain Mura stated that as officers were attempting to talk to the male, he moved forward at the officers with the knife. As the male moved forward toward the officers, that was when one office shot the male. The male was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Captain Mura advised that the incident took place all within about 5-6 minutes, which did not give officers enough time to call for assistance from the Monroe County Forensic Intervention Team.
Rochester Police Chief Cynthia Herriott-Sullivan was on scene but did not address the incident.
The Open Door Mission released the following statement:
“We are praying for our guest, their loved ones, and the Rochester Police Department officers involved in this incident.”
The Rochester Police Department has not released the name of the male victim.
