Police officers shoots and kills male on Hudson Avenue and Avenue D


On Friday evening members of the Rochester Police Department SWAT team was following a suspect who was wanted for attempted murder, first degree assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. The surveillance started around 6:00pm and continued for over 3 hours.


Around 9:30pm, when the suspect was alone, members of the Rochester Police Department SWAT team attempted to take the suspect into custody in the area of Avenue D. As the officers attempted to take the suspect into custody, he ran. Officers chased the suspect into a backyard, the suspect fired at the officers. The two officers returned fire, striking the suspect.


The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police Chief Herriot-Sullivan stated that when the suspect fired at the officers, one of the officers fell, injuring his elbow. Chief Herriot-Sullivan also stated that while the officer was evaluated, there was a bullet hole in his uniform, indicating that the bullet did hit his uniform, but did not strike the office.


Chief Herriot-Sullivan stated that the SWAT team does no wear body cameras, so there is no video of the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave until an internal investigation has been completed.


The New York State Attorney General’s Office is also investigating the shooting.
